Site? - Why I’ve Built this

For me this site is a way to mitigate some of the downsides of social media.
Hopefully, a step towards healthier and more fulfilling online interaction.
All of this not to be preachy to others, but to be honest and consistent with my own values.

For Love

I love internet - without it I wouldn’t be who I am.
Early stage social media platforms streamlined and democratized sharing and exchange of information, allowing people to connect like never before.

However later stage social media has several negative developments which can be summed up as Social Media Enshitification.

I think its important to push back against such "anti consumer practices".

For Personal expression online

I grew up during web 1.0 and feel some nostalgia for that period.
I wanted to do something in that spirit - Crafting a little website using html and css.
This allows me to build something that works for me and better represents me on personal level.
And I’d love to see more of this done by other people!

For Learning

With commercial sitebuilder - you get a more polished and refined product.
But also they look boring and you learn nothing from it.
I love learning new things so this project is an expression of this passion.

For Ownership and responsibility

I've build something that works and that I can maintain myself.
"Keeping it stupid simple" and effective.
For me - it’s more fun, it’s cheaper, and it looks better.

Against Social Media Enshitification

If I'm free to make a choice and choose shit – then I deserve that shit.

  • Commodification - human experience reduced to content.
  • Lack of control - you get exposed to content designed to instigate reaction or catch attention, rather then something you enjoy or care about. Algorithm drives interaction regardless whether you enjoy what you see or not and promotes unhealthy consumption habits. Yeah, fuck that
  • Lack of personal connection - people left for secluded spaces like discord servers.
  • Inconvenient UX - things change but rarely for better. Your attention and data must be sold to afford bonuses for executives who are incapable of making good product, and developers who are developing features you never asked for.
  • Lack of data ownership - even if you pay for the service you still don’t own anything.
  • Mental drain racket - observe sludge tier ads or buy premium.
